A recently refurbished building at 155 Karangahape Rd became world famous on the 22nd of November. A specially invited audience was present to witness the world launch of something billed as “Prevention is better than cure, especially when it comes to hangovers”.
However, news of Tango’s Season of Drinks had leaked along the K road up to 2 days before and with the usual gossip and half-heard mumblings, was being reported as a “free Hangover” session. This meant that the event was descended on by packs of feral drinkers seeking freebies.
Luckily, none were able to make it up to the first floor and the Esquires team of Courteney Perrett, Chris King, Lewis Deeks and Stuart Deeks arrived by helicopter, avoiding the mob. Their arrival was timely as a Mr. Wason; who’d been working on acquiring a hangover in order to test the cure, was trying to get the crowds to disperse. Unfortunately, he chose to address them with a large drink in his hand, which stoked them up even more.
An eyewitness recalls “Wason was trying to speak, but every time he raised his drink, the crowd just shouted ‘Cheers! Where’s ours?’ It was getting quite intense and if the Esquires team hadn’t poured what looked like 5 litres of prime freshly ground Fairtrade coffee into him, I fear for what would have occurred”
Wason’s instant and obvious return to sobriety dispersed the crowd who fled, fearing that their hangovers were in danger. Thanks to the Esquires team’s actions, the day was saved, the music was cranked up and everyone got on with celebrating a narrow escape.
